After a recurrent research on mistrust and control, Alexandre Arrechea explains as follow his news works :
« Try to hold fine beach sand in your hands and that will be an idea close to what my new series of objects, videos and watercolors are like. On the contrary of other of my previous works that look for a link to an specific theme; wether surveillance, control or the stock market. To establish a dialog of social criticism. These new works are constantly “attempting to escape” from it’s own margins due to the multiple associations and references in one same object which goal is to talk of a dysfunctional contemporary landscape.
For instance Bracelet, 2010. Represents a roll building that the way will be displayed in the gallery seems to invite people to roll the (building) piece throughout the gallery. Like kids used to do in the old times with metal hoops of old wooden barrels. Most of the work presented in this exhibition look for an “unstable and imprecise” appearance. Qualities that help me to speak of the nature of affinities or disagreements experienced nowadays. »
Alexandre Arrechea was born in Cuba, in 1970. He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana in 1994. He was a member of the art collective Los Carpinteros, for 12 years, until he left the group in 2003 to pursue his career as a solo artist. Today, he works and lives in Madrid Alexandre Arrechea has participated in numerous groups exhibitions including the MOMA (New York) Shanghai Art Museum, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), Kunsthalle (Berlin) Arizona State University (Los Angeles ) as well as the Havana Biennial 2000 and 2009, the Venice Biennale 2005; Liverpool Biennial 2004; Shangai Biennial and the Sao Paulo Biennial 2002. This summer (2010) he was at the Pontevedra Biennal (Spain) and Portgugal Arte + EDP (Portugal).
