E-renaissance?

Welcome to an age of meaning. Today’s networked culture not only generates hyper connectivity, but also an abundance of changing images and flux. Yet, information is abundant. Commodities of information are freely replicable. Once a thing is made, it can be copied infinitely. We’re surrounded not just by intelligent machines, but by a new layer of reality centered on information, dissolving meaning into total chaos.

How can the digital drive and affect the curatorial process? The approach for the #1dad exhibition is not technologically driven, or even digital art oriented, but focuses instead on the impact and implications of the digital. When I created the gallery in Paris, two and a half years ago, I did not want to reproduce a 20th century model.

In my opinion, in the networked culture we are living in, the gallery has become a place of transition and is no longer a place of destination. I still believe very much in the physical exhibition, but as filter, an information structure in the three dimensions.

————————–-

One could understandably be tempted to say that this is new; that the DAD platform represents a radical shift in how art is seen and enjoyed.

We are of course convinced that there is a certain truth to this, and we look forward to helping build this media, along with the fertile possibilites that come with all new technology, inevitably allowing artists to find light in the cracks, and solutions from problems.

Yet as this selection of artists— assembled in partnership with the curatorial acumen of Philippe Riss XPO GALLERY —demonstrates that what we are ultimately providing is a simple tool. Whether it be paint in a tube, the daguerrotype, or desktop publishing; the technology afforded by screens, apps and clouds are ultimately at the service of the artist’s prerogative.

The digital here is an enabler, a means to communicate ideas housed in forms as diverse as portraiture, figurative narration, formalist abstraction, conceptual postulates, landscape, and even concrete poetry.

It is with great relish, that we look back as we move forward.
