Semiosis: “the signification of a character with respect to the context”

Architecture’s purpose is to fulfill two objectives: create living spaces, in the widest sense of the term, and integrate them into an existing world. It is in this active duality, this to and fro between a building’s internal function and its impact on the environment within which it suddenly materializes, that each project finds its balance, its life and its meaning.
Just as martial arts poses are codifications of the body’s infinite postures, the boundless multiplicity of architectural situations can be codified into architecture’s fundamental stances, stances which succeed one another as places and stories evolve. The exhibition presents the agency’s work through five fundamental stances: emergence, immersion, movement, metamorphosis and envelopment.
These five stances provide responses to the multiple but always-specific challenges posed by every project: the demands of the scheme, the specificities of the context, the intensity of emotional responses, the accumulated layers of history and the size of the program.
