Emmanuelle Castellan

Past: September 22 → November 17, 2012

La Galerie Centre for Contemporary Art in Noisy-le-Sec is offering Emmanuelle Castellan her first institutional solo exhibition in the Ile-de-France Region.

Born in Aurillac (France) in 1976 and currently based in Berlin, the artist will be presenting a series of drawings and new canvases, with many of the latter freestanding and set off by wall drawings.

Emmanuelle Castellan’s painting is marked by an elusive, “delayed action” presence, its motifs brought together in an experimental vein for a totally uncompartmentalised presentation, using walls, hanging rails, window frames, etc.

This seemingly insignificant approach has the effect of imbuing the space with a highly subjective mingling of the ethereal and the organic. The eye almost seems to slide over what she calls her “screen paintings”, oblique movable walls which punctuate the viewing itinerary and mischievously make the space their own.

Listening to the echo of a fluctuating space: this could be the game Emmanuelle Castellan’s painting calls on us to take part in.

Since 2011 Emmanuelle Castellan has been living and working in Berlin, where she contributed to the “Ecotone” exhibition jointly organised by the Kunstverein Tiergarten and the Maison des Arts Georges Pompidou in Cajarc, in south-western France.

Her solo exhibitions in France include “Tout doit disparaître” (Everything Must Go) at the bbb Centre for Contemporary Art in Toulouse (2008), “C’était hier” (That Was Yesterday) at the Interface apartment/gallery in Dijon (2009) and also in 2009, “Il arrive de préférer le desert” (Sometimes You Prefer the Desert) at the Galerie Françoise Besson in Lyon, which represents her.
