Like in their installations and this list of titles, Gelatin is not afraid of switching styles.
From realistic to monochrome, from gracious art to everything, from everything to minimal and back again.

The richness of their artistic language is humorous, provocative, challenging, charming, sometimes
illuminating, but never boring.

The paintings reveal absurd, chaotic and playful scenes with Gelitin and friends as the protagonists, often naked and in improbable, ridiculous and outrageous poses. They comprise traces of their performances through which banal and trivial situations are transformed into initiatory and revelatory experiences. As the Japanese art critic Midori Matsui remarks, in their performances there is a “combination of conceptual defamilarization and boyish humour, the avant-garde aspiration to revolutionize everyday perception and the re-use of the influences of youth culture”.

On the occasion of the 54th Venice Art Biennale (2011) the illuminated nation of Gelatin presented their hottest sculpture ever. Performers from all over the world became Gelatin to chop wood, flirt, play guitar, feed the furnace 24/7, be themselves beautifully and keep the fire burning. A wood fired furnace in the Giardino delle Vergini (Arsenale) melted shards into a puddle of hot liquid glass. A very big lava puddle of hot liquid glass. Logs, fumes, smoke, cracks, heat, energy.

In 2008 Gelatin had a solo show in the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. It was titled La Louvre and brought together over 3.000 works of art. The show was a chaotic, conceptual, revolutionary free spirited universe of caramel sculptures, drawings, landscapes, photographs, books, furniture, paintings, everything made by gelatin and their entourage. Among all these works were several versions of the Mona Lisa in plastiline — recomposed in a vast playful, chaotic and prolific installation.

One of their most remarkable, certainly their largest, sculptures is Hase (2005), a giant pink rabbit that was knitted by grand mothers for more than 5 years and then set on a hilltop in Piemont, Italy. The installation, which because of its size deforms the perception of the place while taking us back to the freedom of childhood, will be visible (even from the orbit ) until 2025.

Gelitin is comprised of four artists. They met first in 1978, when they all attended a summer camp. They have been playing and working together. From 1993 they began exhibiting internationally.
