Woman in motion

Past: October 14 → November 20, 2010

Galerie Lelong is proud to present an exhibition of works by Nancy Spero (1926-2009), considered one of the iconic pioneers of contemporary art over the last fifty years. Woman in motion consists of hand-printed and collage works on paper containing the visual vocabulary for which Spero is known: acrobats, goddesses, figures from art history and political imagery. This exhibition celebrates Spero’s women in cultures from ancient times to the contemporary. They fly, dance, run and hunt across the surface of the paper. In 1987 Spero spoke of these women: “Woman in process, never a fixed or stable identity, woman as a continuous presence, woman in motion — gesture and movement being the earliest forms of human communication — woman warrior, woman victim…”.

Timed to coincide with the extensive survey of Spero’s work, Nancy Spero at the Centre Pompidou (October 13 2010 — January 10th 2011) this exhibition includes major late works such as The Goddess Nut II, 1990 and other work featuring, for example, the iconic Celtic fertility symbol Sheela-Na-Gig in Sheela, 1997 and more overtly political imagery in Fashion, 1999.

Nancy Spero was born in 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. She studied in Chicago before living in Paris 1959-1964 with her husband, the painter Leon Golub. Recent important museum exhibitions include Dissidances, MACBA Barcelona, Reina Sofia, Madrid, Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo, Andalucia Spain, 2008-2009; Artaud Paintings and Codex Artaud, Frac Haute — Normandie 2007; and Woman as Protagonist, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Austria. Nancy Spero died in New York City on October 18, 2009.
