The First Forty Years

FIAC’s 40th edition confirms its status as a leading international art fair. Attentive to the shifting preoccupations of contemporary creation, mindful of certain transformations in the gallery world and of the increasingly important role played by art fairs, FIAC aims to be reactive within a changing context while pursuing its development in a spirit of continuity.

FIAC 2013 reaffirms the grounding principles which underlie its identity: a rigorous selection process which ensures exemplary quality standards throughout the fair; a generalist vocation that leads us to present a panorama of modern and contemporary art as well as emerging trends; its permeability to a wide range of creative practices including those which fall outside the core focus of the art market; a longstanding affiliation with the patrimonial sites which house FIAC in the heart of Paris and the close ties which connect us to the French cultural infrastructure, both institutional and private.

Notwithstanding a broad international representation (25 countries are represented in 2013), the impressive participation of galleries from the USA (the second most strongly represented national group after France) and the steadily developing presence of exhibitors from south and central America, FIAC is distinguished among the major international fairs by its strong national contingent and its distinctive European flavour: 30% of the exhibitors are French whereas Frieze London presents 25% British galleries; 73% of FIAC exhibitors are European compared to 57% for Art Basel, Switzerland.

FIAC 2013 will bring together 184 galleries from 25 countries at the Grand Palais. France is represented by 55 galleries, followed by the United States with 33 galleries, Germany with 22 galleries, Italy with 13 galleries, the United Kingdom with 12 galleries, Belgium with 11 galleries and Switzerland and Brazil with 5 galleries respectively. New countries represented this year include Canada, Ireland and the Czech Republic. 36 galleries are participating for the first time or are returning to FIAC after a period of absence.

Additionally, the historic, monumental work by Jean Dubuffet, Welcome Parade, jointly presented by Pace Gallery (New York) and Waddington-Custot (London) in association with the City of Paris and the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, will be presented at the entrance of the Petit Palais, immediately opposite the Grand Palais.

Grand Palais nave & Salon d’honneur

The Nave and the Salon d’Honneur will host 129 galleries specializing in modern and contemporary art.

• An unparalleled number of prestigious international galleries will exhibit: 303 Gallery, Air de Paris, Gavin Brown’s enterprise, Capitain Petzel, Sadie Coles HQ, Paula Cooper, Chantal Crousel, Massimo De Carlo, Fortes Vilaça, Gagosian Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, Greene Naftali, Marian Goodman, Bärbel Grässlin, Karsten Greve, Hauser & Wirth, Max Hetzler, Xavier Hufkens, Kukje Gallery / Tina Kim Gallery, kurimanzutto, Yvon Lambert, Lelong, Lisson, Matthew Marks, McKee, kamel mennour, Metro Pictures, Victoria Miro, neugerriemschneider, Galerie Perrotin, Eva Presenhuber, Almine Rech, Regen Projects, Thaddaeus Ropac, Andrea Rosen, Esther Schipper, Sprüth Magers, Waddington-Custot, Michael Werner, White Cube, Zeno X and David Zwirner to name just a few. Fortes Vilaça, neugerriemschneider, McKee and Andrea Rosen among others will be making their début at FIAC.

• There has been a marked increase in the presence of a powerful younger generation of international tastemakers: By way of example, this year Catriona Jeffries, David Kordansky, Giò Marconi and Vitamin Creative Space join 2012 newcomers Greene Naftali, Meyer Riegger and Reena Spaulings Fine Art and FIAC regulars such as Art: Concept, Guido W. Baudach, Isabella Bortolozzi, gb agency, Jan Mot, Franco Noero.

• In keeping with FIAC’s desire to endow the fair with a necessary historical perspective, numerous galleries specialized in modern art will also be present: Galerie 1900-2000, Raquel Arnaud, Applicat-Prazan, McKee, Le Minotaure, Guillermo de Osma, Denise René, Sophie Scheidecker, Natalie Seroussi, Tornabuoni, UBU Gallery, Zlotowski and Waddington Custot.

• Several much-awaited solo shows are announced: Serge Poliakoff at Applicat-Prazan, Anthony Pearson at David Kordansky, Nuno Ramos at Fortes Vilaça, Josef Strau at House of Gaga, Jean Dupuy at Loevenbruck, Simon Fujiwara at Neue Alte Brücke, Ai Weiwei at neugerriemschneider.

• The Salon d’honneur will host 24 carefully selected galleries, recognised for their ability to identify, nurture and promote rising talents while securing their position on the market place.

Level 1

The three exhibition galleries located on the 1st floor will host 55 galleries showing contemporary art and emerging trends.

• Again, the arrival of a large number of leading names: Algus Greenspon, François Ghebaly, hunt kastner, Juliette Jongma, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Labor, Mendes Wood, mother’s tankstation, Overduin & Kite, Ramiken Crucible and Jonathan Viner… is to be noted. They join Marcelle Alix, Bureau, Cherry & Martin, Dependence, Karma International, Peres Projects, Plan B, Rodeo, Jessica Silverman, The Third Line and Zak|Branicka.

• FIAC continues to support the young French gallery scene: castillo/corrales and Jérôme Poggi are 2013 newcomers, joining Martine Aboucaya, Marcelle Alix, Cortex Athletico, Crèvecoeur, Gaudel de Stampa, New Galerie, Semiose and Triple V… These new exhibitors reinforce a solid base of FIAC regulars which have become references in their own right: Bugada & Cargnel, Valentin and Frank Elbaz from Paris, Francesca Minini from Milan, Office Baroque from Antwerp, Sommer Contemporary from Tel Aviv, Stigter Van Doesburg from Amsterdam.

• The 2013 selection is without doubt the strongest group of young, leading international galleries yet to be presented together at FIAC. Many solo shows are programmed: Caleb Considine at Essex Street; E’wao Kagoshima at Algus Greenspon; Anita Molinero at Alain Gutharc; Slavs and Tatars at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler; Parker Ito at New Galerie; Scott Olson at Overduin and Kite; Tammy Rae Carland at Jessica Silverman; Servane Mary at Triple V as well as Paulo Nazareth at Mendes Wood.

Lafayette sector and Lafayette Prize

FIAC and its official partner, the Galeries Lafayette group, will host the 5th edition of the FIAC’s signature Lafayette Sector, a programme of support for emerging galleries inaugurated in 2009. This programme will bring together 10 galleries selected for the quality of their prospective exhibition programmes, and on the basis of a specific project they have created for FIAC featuring one or two artists. Participants are chosen by a jury consisting of curators from internationally renowned museums: Jean de Loisy (President of the Palais de Tokyo, Paris), Emma Lavigne (Curator at the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris) and Scott Cameron Weaver (Curator at the Kunstmuseum, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel). Guillaume Houzé (Director of Sponsorship, Galeries Lafayette group, Paris) represents the Galeries Lafayette group on the jury.

This programme provides significant financial support to the chosen galleries for their participation in FIAC. Since it was established, the Lafayette Sector has supported more than fifty galleries among the most promising of their generation. This programme aims to create the conditions in which they can establish efficient networks and augment their visibility on the world stage.

For FIAC 2013, 10 galleries from 8 countries have been selected: C L E A R I N G (Brooklyn, Brussels) Crèvecoeur (Paris) Freymond-Guth Fine Arts (Zürich) hunt kastner (Prague), Juliette Jongma (Amsterdam) PSM (Berlin) Ramiken Crucible (New York) Rodeo (Istanbul), Semiose (Paris) Martin van Zomeren (Amsterdam) Galleries that are joining FIAC for the first time or returning in 2013.

Eight galleries will present solo shows: Korakrit Arunanondchai at C L E A R I N G, Shana Moulton at Crèvecoeur, Sophie Bueno-Boutellier at Freymond-Guth Fine Arts, Eva Kotatkova at hunt kastner, Ursula Mayer at Juliette Jongma, Gavin Kenyon at Ramiken Crucible, Eduardo Basualdo at PSM, and Anne de Vries at Martin van Zomeren.

Two galleries will present a joint presentation of two artists: Shahryar Nashat and Christodoulos Panayiotou at Rodeo and Aurélien Mole and Julien Tibéri at Semiose.

Selected by the Lafayette jury among the artists presented, the winner of the 2013 Lafayette Prize will benefit from the acquisition of an artwork by the Galeries Lafayette group, as well as an exhibition endowed with a production budget to be held at the Palais de Tokyo in 2014.

The Y.C.I. programme (Young Curator Invitational)

FIAC, the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard and the Institut Français host the YCI programme (Young Curators Invitational) for the 8th consecutive year. YCI invites a group of promising personalities from the rising generation of critics and exhibition curators to Paris during FIAC week. Participants are selected based on propositions from international institutions. The aim of this programme is to provide the opportunity for invited guests to discover the French art scene and to meet with its different protagonists.

During the opening of FIAC, a conference in the Auditorium of the Grand Palais will bring together the participants of YCI and FOCUS, the curators invitational hosted by the Institut Français, creating the conditions for exchange with French and international curators and art critics. Since its creation, the YCI programme has provided more than fifty young international curators with an introduction to the French arts scene.

Marcel Duchamp Prize

Alongside the ADIAF and the Centre Pompidou, FIAC renews its support of the Marcel Duchamp prize by hosting projects by the four artists preselected for the 2013 edition: Farah Atassi, Latifa Echakhch, Claire Fontaine and Raphaël Zarka. On Friday, October 25th, the public is invited to attend the presentation of the artists by their spokes people at the Auditorium of the Centre Pompidou.

The winner of the 2013 Marcel Duchamp Prize will be announced at 11.30am on Saturday, October 26th at the Grand Palais.
