NextLevel presents the second solo exhibition of Argentinian artist Hugo Aveta (b. 1965, Cordoba). Entitled, El Silencio del Mundo, the exhibition is composed of recent works in the artist’s preferred media — installation, sculpture, photography and video.

“Fascinated by the desolate silence of death, Hugo Aveta explores the aesthetic possibilities of catastrophe: calcinated food (‘El Hambre’), culture reduced to bone fragments (‘Weltliterature: la historia en los huesos’) and the vitality of ashes (‘Los ojos sobre la tierra’). Competing forces battle before his watchful eye that ensnares them in a photosensitive emulsion, allowing to both capture and restitute instants of the human condition subject to power and violence (photo and video ‘Tracción a Sangre’ series). Before becoming silent, the world’s voice fades back into the body thus converted into a tragic echo chamber.

After an excellent year in 2015-2016, the coming year promises to be even more successful for Hugo Aveta whose work is to be included in several prestigious exhibitions internationally, such as the forthcoming “Soulevements” exhibition at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris (October 2016 — January 2017) curated by the philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Hubermann; in the exhibition “Contradiction and Continuity: Photography from Argentina” at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles (from September 2017, as part of the second ‘Pacific Standard Time’ program across California), curated by Judith Keller and Idurre Alonso; and in a forthcoming exhibition at the Haroldo Conti Cultural Centre for Memory, in Buenos Aires (Argentina), in the Fall of 2017.
