Painting with history in a room full of people with funny names III

Past: June 24 → September 13, 2015

Palais de Tokyo invited Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai (born 1986, lives in New York and Bangkok) to design, for the first time in France, a total environment which will bring together a collection of works, most of which have not been seen before.

Inspired by his travels between New York and Bangkok, his work immerses the viewer in a kitschy syncretism, fusing religions, popular music and icons from mass consumption.

Upsetting the norms of western modernity and connecting contrasting social and political phenomena, his work is structured using installations, paintings and films, three to date : 2012-2555 (2012), 2556 (2013) and 2557 (2014).

At Palais de Tokyo, the exhibition is organised in two parts, “The Brain” and “The Body”, and presents a new film combining images from his recent shoot (winter 2015) in Thailand with images from his previous films.

Presenting a cinematographic extension of the film itself, the second part, “The Body”, encompasses a set of sculptures, a floor painting as well as a group of installations and other sculptures. The artist’s floor painting was inspired by body paintings and echoes the film which was made in part using a drone. Depending on your vantage point, the painting reveals either a human silhouette or a landscape.
