The work entitled Jardins portables by Lois Weinberger consists of the simple plastic carrier bags often used by migrants, whose economy of means connotes social strata, poverty, immigration and mobility in the context of globalisation.

The artist has placed the bags on an area of ground in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, filling the bags with soil from areas of waste ground and using them as a garden for seeds brought in naturally by the wind and the birds. Plants take root and grow freely, gradually making the bags disappear. As the seasons pass, it is destined to become invisible, forming an intangible garden to be explored in our minds more than with our eyes.

The work catches the attention of passers-by and encourages them to reflect on analogies between nature and culture, ways of thinking about and inhabiting an urban space, the concept of diversity, and our approach to what we consider to be “foreign”— both in the world of plants and in human society.
