Beginning of the Bright

Past: November 19, 2015 → January 31, 2016

“I still remember those thousand of buttons of different shapes and colours crowding her workshop in New York during our first meeting four years ago." Buttons ! But not any kind, those are precious and will be part of the future works made by the artist. Ran Hwang uses fashion vocabulary and materials to dress Plexiglass or wood panels. Threads, needles, pearls, pins, crystal or paper buttons… from those minuscule elements, the Korean artists creates imposing pieces fill with an intense poesy and a fulgurant spirituality.

This alphabet called “Hangeul” is known for its excellency and its originality. Its significative value is characterised by love toward the king Sejong the Great’s people to favour the people’s literacy.”

“The process of building large installations are time consuming and repetitive and it requires manual effort which provides a form of self-meditation. I hammer thousands of pins into a wall like a monk who, facing the wall, practices Zen. My works are divided into two groups. In the first, pins are used to hold buttons remain free to move and suggest the genetic human tendency to be irresolute. I choose buttons, which are as common and ordinary as human beings.

This movement create a volume, a perspective giving to her installations a life of its own, birds are then flying or kept down by an obstacle.
