Des Espaces Autres

Past: December 8, 2010 → January 15, 2011

An Exhibit of Shunsuke Francois Nanjo, after/according to his study of Hétérotopie in Art.

In 1976, during a conference at the “Cercle d’études architecturales” (The association of architectural studies) Michel Foucault introduced the idea of Hétérotopie in urbanism & architecture. The origin of the word has never been truly dated, however Hétérotopie is a term that seems already to be used in the medical world to designate a foreign body which naturally forms in an appropriated organ ( the displacement of an organ from its normal position ). Conceptually, Michel Foucault defined Hétérotopie like a physical location and a tangible utopia in the real world. Those are concrete spaces that embrace the imaginary.

Therefore creating micro spaces in our society. “A world in a world”. In discovering & rediscovering this concept in my work method became forward on the creation of those microcosms, outside the real of time (timeless), outside of our concept of reality, but still present and locatable, findable “on the map”. If my practice has always tried to reveal interstitial spaces, as much as the individual or historical memory, as specific characteristic identity of locations, Hétérotopie opened a breach in the conceptualisation of my work and my production method.

This exhibit will be the first in the study that I am pursuing today on Hétérotopie in art, raising questions on the topology of this concept, proposed answers in the form of plastic and conceptual pieces. “Of Other Spaces” will & therefore, be present in the Catherine et André Hug gallery.
