Arnaud Labelle-Rojoux
However hard I try to define myself, I can never do it, or at least in a very banal way through the kind of biographical details you find on the glossy covers of novels: a date of birth, two or three or ten exhibitions, a few books and a few more or less prestigious baubles. When I read such notes I feel as if I’m looking at another version of myself that in the end is not me. So what should I write? That, more than the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, more than museums or theoretical lectures, my true artistic education was the discovery of English pop music, the Beach Boys, girl groups, Jacques Dutronc and Nino Ferrer in the mid-1960s? I have already said this a hundred times in overly predictable commentaries asserting “subculture” as the source of my art (which I only half believe!). The same old song, in other words. So, what next? Since if you want a thing done well you must get others to do it, you would do better to read them than my rehashes…
