Les Douches la Galerie is pleased to present L’éloge de la main [In Praise of the Hand], a collective exhibition crossing various movements that investigates the motif of the hand in photography. This exhibition brings together fifty prints from the works of twenty-seven artists spanning the period from 1925 to 2018.

What is the connection between these two utterly different women? Berenice Abbott sought out the light, while Vivian Maier hid amongst the shadows. One indefatigably knocked on every door in order to get her projects off the ground; the other criss-crossed the globe on her own.

Since its beginnings in 1839, photography has been a rich, potential source of inspiration for scientists. We can see what’s invisible because of it and at the beginning of the 20th century, the avant-garde grabbed this scientific iconography, reworked it and adapted it to their own artistic needs.

During the entire ten year period of the project — 1929-1939 — Berenice Abbott produced the finest record ever made of an American City. Her point was graphically to capture the times, to make a record, in as artistic a fashion as possible, that would be of use to historians, sociologists and even art critics.

With Berenice Abbott, urban experience is at the heart of the exhibition: in an America shaken by the Wall Street Crash, her images of 1930s New York convey her fascination with an urban landscape in the throes of dramatic change. Also known for championing the work of Eugène Atget, Abbott, who originally wanted to be sculptor, proved to be a great photographer of matter, space and light.
