Didier Saby
Didier Saby is a painter and visual arts teacher. Trained in Paris in illustration techniques, he earned a DEUG and later a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in the late 1990s. Active on the art scene since the mid-1980s, he was then based in Collioure, where he practiced watercolor and worked outdoors. This period confirmed his interest in color and in painting on canvas that emphasized transparency, achieved through the use of specific mediums that accelerated drying time. Drawing already played a structuring role, supporting a careful attention to light and contrast.
His move to the Lot in the 1990s marked a turning point. Materiality became more prominent, opacity gradually replaced translucent effects, and the pictorial surface gained density. It was at this time that the motif of the monkey emerged, becoming a lasting focus of his work. He deepened this exploration by structuring his compositions through the very postures of his subjects, whose bodies define the field of vision.
Color follows an internal logic, underscoring how his work as a whole reflects an ongoing investigation into the relationship between subject and painting, in which the motif becomes a vehicle for exploring gesture, composition, and the correspondences between animality and the human condition.
