Martin Sastre — À propos — Slash Paris

Martín Sastre’s work deconstructs the various models, “clichés” and icons of consumer society through the position of Latin America in the state of globalisation. Availing himself of the creative and advertising strategies generated by globalisation, Sastre brings his sarcastic, humour-filled gaze to bear in adopting a highly critical stance towards the mass media, which are the starting point and catalyst for his videos. A committed attitude that is patent in his questioning of the norms which, in art as in life, form the structure of a complex mesh of relations evincing the differences imposed by economic power centres of various kinds.

This work as a whole is the fruit of the artist’s fantasy, he appearing in the guise of extravagant characters who baulk at inhabiting a world shot through with contradictions. Characters who find their place in the various mechanisms invented to escape from a reality to which it is difficult to become accustomed, such as Hollywood films, videogames and pop stars. Sastre looks ironically at the building of such shared dreams in a drastically divided society.
