Matthieu Laurette
Born in 1970, Matthieu Laurette, the winner of the Ricard Prize in 2003, has seen his artworks exhibited in numerous institutions and included in multiple public and private collections.
His career began in the 1990s when he used the media landscape as his creative material, participating as a candidate in the television dating show “Tournez Manège.” He then went on to make numerous other media appearances (from 1993 to the present day). At the 2001 Venice Biennale, he presented a polymorphic installation titled “Les produits remboursés” (Refunded Products), centered around commercial offers from large retailers taken to their logical conclusion, with the aim of generating a circuit of gratuitousness that he extended into exhibitions and on a website.
Continuously questioning the status of the object, as well as that of the artwork, and fundamentally the artist through his own existence, Laurette stages himself as much as he utilizes his image to explore his condition.
Encompassing a wide range of artistic forms, from interventions in the media sphere to installations, his practice now also extends to the new trends on Instagram, always maintaining a spirit of detachment and mockery that has positioned him as one of the faces of contemporary French art in this new century.
