Sophia Al Maria
Born in 1983 in Tacoma (USA), Sophia Al Maria is a Qatari-American artist, writer, and filmmaker based in London. Her work, at the intersection of drawing, sculpture, film, and installation, explores science fiction narratives, mythologies, and counter-histories, particularly through the lens of “Gulf Futurism,” a concept she co-created. Al Maria questions technological isolation, consumerism, and the erasure of collective memories.
Her recent exhibitions include Grey Unpleasant Land (Spike Island, Bristol, 2024), Not My Bag (Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, 2023), and Beast Type Song (Tate Britain, London, 2019). In 2025, she presented The Pits and 2125 (Somerset House, London), two parallel installations on future ruins and post-oil utopias. She is represented by The Third Line (Dubai) and Project Native Informant (London).
Sophia Al Maria offers a critical and poetic reflection on possible futures, blending fiction and reality.
