This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol’s work by focusing on a dimension often overshadowed by the fame of his silkscreens: drawing. Long before becoming one of the leading figures of Pop Art, the American artist used drawing as a true laboratory for creation, a medium he continued to explore throughout his career.

Bringing together nearly 150 drawings alongside paintings, photographs, silkscreens, and archival materials, the exhibition highlights the many roles drawing played in his practice. From his early commercial illustrations to the preparatory sketches for some of his most iconic works, the exhibition reveals an artist in constant experimentation, attentive to the possibilities of repetition, transformation, and the circulation of images.

Organized into five thematic sections, the exhibition examines subjects that run throughout his work, including portraiture, identity, writing, death, and the invention of new artistic processes. Rarely exhibited works, presented alongside documents from The Factory, offer insight into the methods behind his images and the connections he forged between manual intervention and mechanical reproduction.

Through this exceptional group of works, the exhibition reveals a lesser known Warhol, for whom drawing was not only a means of expression but also the starting point for an ongoing reflection on the image and its making.
