Bertrand Lamarche — Le Baphomet
Exhibition
Bertrand Lamarche
Le Baphomet
Past: September 16 → December 17, 2017
From September 16th to December 17th, La Maréchalerie is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Bertrand Lamarche, which focuses on the figure of the Baphomet. Since its early stages, Bertrand Lamarche’s work is infused with a series of recurring events and figures: the Caucasian giant hogweed, the city of Nancy’s skyline, Kate Bush and meteorology—all embodied by an ensemble of works that can be considered as micro-scenarios.
Baphomet is a mystic and occult figure, both idolatrous and androgynous, brought to light by Pierre Klossowski’s eponymous novel in 1965. Already conjured in several of Bertrand Lamarche earlier pieces, such as the installation La Réplique or the video The Breaths, “the Prince of modifications” here takes the shape of a levitating subject, around which are articulated works referring to a principle of transformation and operating on the registers of the initiatory journey, the change of scale and mutation.
Animated in the etymological sense of the term, the exhibition space is traversed by movements, pulsations, and voices. The works are presented as the materialization of abstract concepts, and through a display of automated or organic forms convene a bestiary that may echo the classics of the fantasy genre and science fiction literature.
