Nosso Barco Tambor Terra
In 9 days: June 6 → July 25, 2025
This summer, Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto transforms the Nef of the Grand Palais d’Été into an immersive, sensory space with Nosso Barco Tambor Terra (Our Boat Drum Earth), a monumental installation made of crochet, bark, and spices, inviting wonder and shared experience.
Designed to be walked through and inhabited, this multisensory environment expresses a deep connection to nature and explores the continuity between our own bodies and that of the Earth through handcrafted work, organic materials, and ancestral techniques. The piece is inspired by the profound impact of sailing and navigation on the world—forces that reshaped relationships between people and places.
Neto reimagines the imagery and symbols linked to these histories as a collective and ritualistic communion within a porous architectural structure. The sculpture incorporates a wide array of instruments from across the globe, with periodic activations inviting visitors to step inside and play the hidden drums.
By uniting cultural differences, the artist poetically evokes the possibility of universal communication through pulse and rhythm.
A rich program of events extends the experience around the installation: concerts, workshops, and Bavart’dages guided tours invite both children and adults to explore themes dear to the artist, including music, textiles, Brazilian history, and climate issues.
