Weak Tongue

In 3 days: May 19 → July 24, 2022

Weak Tongue, Eva Barto’s first solo exhibition in a Parisian institution, is a continuation of a research around the notions of support, financial support, and their ambiguities.

A shift will take place from July 25 to October 2, in the Sharp Smile* exhibition, which will be held at the MACRO in Rome.

A literal translation of Weak Language, Weak Tongue refers to the discrepancies and errors in language and the dubious and ambivalent behaviours they imply.

The exhibition is built through the use of a sharp wooden tongue that lends itself constantly to reversals. It manifests itself in the manipulations, interpretations and deviations of laws and rules that protect and spare, both those who make them, and those who circumvent them.

Weak Tongue exaggerates the opportunistic method in place in these strategies, delivering it through borrowed testimonials, accumulating official and unofficial versions, real, erroneous, or contradictory. The shift from one discourse to another and the treatment of the exhibition space aimed at neutralizing it, establish a regime of suspicion and lead to consider the context as a whole, to measure what is said and you, leaving the corruptive dynamic to spread and spare nothing.

The exhibition is therefore both a witness, an accomplice and a hostage of the mechanisms at work. It establishes a whole apparatus of revelations, omissions and protections of information, constrained to deliver some of its data only outside its own framework and temporality, where can then unfold the elements of its complementarity*.

“Considering that the property stolen by their President to live in splendour had to come back to the people, the demonstrators did not ransack or loot the premises, but wished to open them to the visit as a museum of corruption.” Tripadvisor -Museum of Corruption

It’s quite enjoyable, now we’re outlawed, and now we’re not… only one comma has been changed. M/C.R

1 Mithridate methods, videos, 1/3, 2/3, the title refers to the King, who feared being poisoned, administered a minute dose of poison daily so that his body could acclimatize to it.

Eva Barto summons the relations of power governing property codes, notably through the study of hegemonic discourses, corruption mechanisms and impasses of the law. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, at the gb agency gallery, at Villa Arson (2016), at the Kunstverein Nuremberg, at the Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart (2021), and soon at the MACRO in Rome (2022). It has also been presented at the Marcelle Alix Gallery (2015), the Biennale de Rennes and the Kadist Foundation (2016), the Pernod Ricard Corporate Foundation (2017, 2019), the Wattis Art Center (2017), the Max Mayer Gallery (2018, 2021), the Secession Museum (2018), at the Biennale d’Anafi (2018), at the Grand Café (2020) … Laureate of the Étant Donné scholarship in collaboration with the SculptureCenter New York, she will continue in September 2022 a search around legal voids. In 2016, she created the editorial project Buttonwood.Press. She is co-founder of the collective of art workers’ rights La Buse and co-hosts the show ForTune on * Duuu Radio. Since 2019, she teaches at the Lyon School of Fine Arts.
