FIAC 2013 — Hors-les-murs
Fair
FIAC 2013
Hors-les-murs
Past: October 24 → 27, 2013
FIAC 2013 develops its Hors-les-Murs programme in prestigious Parisian venues: outdoor exhibitions of sculptures and installations are presented together with performance programmes, lecture series and screenings of artists’ films.
Outdoor exhibitions of sculptures
For its 40th edition, FIAC 2013 inaugurates a new Hors-les-Murs site, les Berges de la Seine thus consolidating its installation along the Seine. This project has been made possible by the pedestrian redevelopment of the left banks of the Seine, a flagship project of the City of Paris for 2013.
Tuileries Garden
For the 8th consecutive year, FIAC presents an ensemble of outdoor works in the Tuileries Garden in association with the Domaine National du Louvre. The exceptional context of the garden together with the continued success of the programme enables FIAC to present some twenty projects each year, including installations, sculptures, performances and sound works harmoniously positioned in the extraordinary variety of contexts provided by the garden: groves, alleys, lawns, ponds and fountains.
Jardin des Plantes & Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle
The works invest both indoor and outdoor spaces: the Jardin des Plantes, but also the emblematic sites of the Muséum such as the Ménagerie, the Great Greenhouses, the Galerie de Paleontology as well as the Great Galerie of Evolution. This project provides the opportunity to showcase a unique programme of artworks centred on themes of ever-increasing relevance which echo the concerns of the venue: nature, biodiversity, sustainable development and environmental protection. The 2013 programme will feature works by several artists and a performance by Hamish Fulton will take place in the Jardin des Plantes on Saturday, October 26th.
Place Vendôme
Following the considerable success of the inaugural edition in 2012 featuring three monumental sculptures by Jaume Plensa, FIAC renews its collaboration with the Comité Vendôme and its members. Home to the many of the most celebrated law firms, financial institutions, jewellers and luxury goods manufacturers in the world, the Place Vendôme reverberates with the spirit of excellence born of the encounter between age-old artisanal savoir-faire, artistic creation and exceptional genius. In normal times, it is an exquisitely beautiful location with elegant and harmonious stone façades lining its four sides providing a jewellery-case like setting for the intricately embellished Colonne Vendôme which rises up in the centre. Now temporarily disfigured by extensive renovation work, FIAC and the Comité Vendôme have chosen to work with rather than in spite of current conditions. In collaboration with kamel mennour, Paris, FIAC and the Comité Vendôme proudly present an installation by Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata. Kawamata’s ambitious and exceptional in situ project will sublimate the existing impression of urban disorder, transitory shelters and precariousness in a deeply poetic and meaningful gesture which will leave lasting and memorable impressions..
Left Banks of the Berges de la Seine
For its 40th anniversary, FIAC 2013 is proud to present a new Hors-les-Murs site, thus extending its installation along the Seine thanks to the pedestrian redevelopment of the left bank of the Seine, a flagship project of the City of Paris for 2013. An open-air itinerary along the Seine will be proposed between the Tuileries Garden, the Solférino footbridge, the Pont Alexandre III, the Pont des Invalides and the Grand Palais.
Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris
In collaboration with Waddington Custot, (London), Pace (New York, London, Beijing) and the Fondation Dubuffet, the monumental, historic work by Jean Dubuffet Welcome Parade will be presented at the entrance to the Petit Palais immediately opposite the Grand Palais.
To facilitate access to FIAC’s different Hors-les-Murs sites, all of which situated along the Seine, river transport will be proposed for the first time. Providing a pleasant and leisurely cruise between FIAC’s various Hors Les Murs sites, Batobus boats will accost at the Jardin des Plantes, the Tuileries Garden, the left bank of the Seine at the Solférino bridge and the Grand Palais.
Performances
Ouvertures/Openings at the Auditorium du Louvre For the 6th consecutive year, FIAC pursues its programme of performances Ouvertures/Openings, conceived and produced in collaboration with the Auditorium of the Louvre Museum. This cycle explores the borders between artistic disciplines by confronting the history of performance since the 1960s with its current forms.
The 2013 edition brings together 4 exceptional artists and performers, showcasing an extensive array of music and sound. Audio materials and acoustic events are investigated and developed in their relationships to gesture and language. Events are destined for both the spectator’s intimate perception and the public space.
Performances by Xavier Le Roy, Olaf Nicolai and Alvin Lucier are presented in the Louvre Museum and in the Auditorium of the Louvre, from Friday, October 25th to Sunday, October 27th.
Olaf Nicolai will present the performative installation Escalier du Chant (2011-2013) and a sound performance Innere Stimme (2010). These two artworks, designed for the museum space, allow Olaf Nicolai to displace the concert format. He creates a shifting spatial situation between the a capella singers and the visitor. Escalier du Chant was created at the Neue Pinakothek of Munich and is based on new and original compositions by contemporary composers. They are invited to source their inspiration from key moments in current political events. Innere Stimme reveals and dilates the muted voice of a composition by Schumann.
Xavier Le Roy’s Salut für Caudwell, (2005) is based on the music of Helmuth Lachenmann. The choreographer captures a visual quality inherent to musical practice. In homage to the poet Christopher Caudwell, the music is composed with disjointed sounds and is one of the composer’s masterpieces. Through the use of echoes, Xavier Le Roy plays with the experience of listening and proposes choreography of gestures derived from the musician’s instrument, his tool.
American composer Alvin Lucier has been a pioneer of experimental music since the 1950s. He explores sound as both a physical material and in terms of its physiological effects. Specifically designed for the Auditorium of the Louvre Museum, he presents a retrospective concert which invokes many of the characteristics of his artistic vocabulary: from his famous performance combining voice, amplification and architecture, I Am Sitting In A Room (1969), to compositions with broad textures, drawing on acoustic and electric instruments, amplified objects and pre- recorded materials Between the Tuileries Garden and the Louvre, Tarek Atoui will present a sound structure. For the past decade, musician and performer Tarek Atoui has been revisiting the principle of sampling by combining sound archives, the creation of electronic sounds and instrumental improvisation. This year he has conceived a specific project for the Jardin du Carrousel, a nomadic sound installation that will be activated during improvisation sessions with guest musicians. Concerts will be held on Thursday October 24th at 5pm and Saturday October 26th at 7pm.
In Process
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary and in association with curator Mehdi Brit, FIAC inaugurates a performance series entitled In Process dedicated to the emerging art scene. Actions and hybrid creations are presented to the public over six days in the Grand Palais and its associated sites. This programme explores the idea of re-enactment and our relationship to memory. Artists are invited to produce performances inspired by an action, an event or an artwork, a dialogue with history or performative practices.
Performances by Alex Cecchetti, Marcelline Delbecq & Remy Héritier, Emma Dusong, Eva Kotatkova, Chloé Maillet & Louise Hervé, Alexandra Pirici & Manuel Pelmus and Noé Soulier will take place in the various sites at the Grand Palais and Hors les Murs venues throughout FIAC week.
Performances by Alexandra Pirici & Manuel Pelmus are supported by the Institut Culturel Roumain.
Artists’ films Cinéphémère
For the 4th consecutive year, FIAC joins forces with the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard to present Cinéphémère in the Tuileries Garden in association with the Musée du Louvre. The Cinéphémère is a 14- seat cinema that is entirely equipped and installed in a custom-built shipping container. Approximately a dozen artists’ films will be screened daily during FIAC. Additionally, the FILAF (Festival international du livre d’art et du film) in Perpignan and the FIDMarseille (Festival International de Cinéma) present highlights from the recent seasons.
Auditorium du Grand Palais In collaboration with MK2, FIAC develops its cultural programme by presenting a cycle of feature-length films on art, drawn from MK2’s archives. Further program highlights have been selected by the FILAF (Festival international du livre d’art et du film) in Perpignan. Conferences and book signing sessions will also be held in this space, together with a performance by Marcelline Delbecq within the framework of the In Process programme.
Silencio Located in the Quartier de la Bourse, the Silencio is a hybrid space, combining the atmospheres of an English-style private club, a chic hotel bar, a small concert hall or an intimate nightclub. Entirely imagined and designed by David Lynch, the space is inspired by the diversity and originality of his signature style. Each evening during FIAC, a rich programme of films, concerts and talks with artists is presented. “Carte blanche” events are dedicated to artists such as Martine Aballéa, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Christian Boltanski, Tobias Madison, Raymond Pettibon, Georges Tony Stoll, Ryan Trecartin & Lizzie Fitch…
