Hema Upadhyay is a visual artist whose work is rooted in her personal experience — her parents’ move from Pakistan to India, her own move to Mumbai — but evokes more generally the mutations of contem- porary India and the theme of migration. The cities she depicts reflect the organic, haphazard development of Mumbai — a colorful labyrinth which nonetheless betrays deep social inequalities.
