“The Paraphrase is a recurring stylistic device in Illés Sarkantyu’s work. Whether “in the manner of” or through direct quote, his photographic language calls forth other artists’ visions of the world. Making pictures “in the manner of” means putting himself into someone else’s shoes, absorbing a stranger’s sensitivity and approaching its essence, at the risk of losing oneself.”
