Les maîtres de la sculpture de Côte d’Ivoire
Exhibition
Les maîtres de la sculpture de Côte d’Ivoire
Past: April 14 → July 26, 2015
Master sculptors from the ivory coast.
By bringing together nearly 200 historic and contemporary works, the exhibition ’Master Sculptors from the Ivory Coast’honours the great sculptors and sculpture schools of the Ivory Coast and neighbouring countries.
Too often considered a handicraft in the West, created solely for the purpose of rituals, African art — like Western art — is the product of individual artists whose work refl ects exceptional and individual artistic talent and skill. From the perspective of their aesthetic impact and the originality of their creators, the exhibition places the sculptures in the religious and stylistic context of 19th and early 20th century Workshops, particularly those of the Sénoufo, the Lobi, the Dan and the Baoulé. The exhibition also presents installations and work by contemporary artists: heir to the great artists of the past, the new generation of “transnational” African artists continues the creative contribution of West African sculptors of the post- Colonial period.
Curators: Eberhard fischer, ethnologist, former director of the Rietberg Museum, Zurich, and Lorenz Homberger, curator of African and Oceanic art at the Rietberg Museum, Zurich.
