Les oracles — curated by Marisa Olson
Exhibition
Les oracles
curated by Marisa Olson
Past: February 12 → April 4, 2015
Les Oracles features the work of ten women influenced by science fiction.
With projects ranging from painting, sculpture, and photography to experimental video and animation, Les Oracles reflects these visionary artists’ take on issues that have long-captured the imagination.
Deploying classic tropes from the science fiction genre, including notions of futurism, fantasy, utopia/dystopia, the frontier, embodiment, xenophobia, cosmology & theology, technological change, and evolution, the exhibition takes its title from the concept of the oracle–typically heroic deities, most often female, who act as communicative mediums, providing turning-points in narratives or conversations by speaking to the future in the present.
While some of the works respond directly to classic sci-fi texts and films, others explore the iconography or pop cultural mythologies they convey and inhabit. Some of the works create new worlds of their own, while still others consider the degree to which our present universe is a channel for ideas that were once the stuff of science fiction.
Artists include Julieta Aranda, Juliette Bonneviot, Caroline Delieutraz, Aleksandra Domanovic, Jeanette Hayes, Kristin Lucas, Brenna Murphy, Katja Novitskova, Katie Torn, and Saya Woolfalk. The exhibition is curated by artist Marisa Olson, who is also editing a catalogue to accompany the show, designed by PWR Studio and featuring a work of short science fiction by Claire Evans
