AKAA — Les Rencontres
Past: November 11 → 13, 2016
Three days of conversations and exchanges
Les Rencontres AKAA is a place where the barriers between artists, the public and diverse figures in the art world come down. A program of conversations, film screenings and artistic performances will give the public a chance to meet artists, curators and other art enthusiasts whose passion and initiative bring contemporary art to life in Africa and elsewhere. The public will also be able to participate in direct dialogue with members of the discussion panels.
Les Rencontres will take place in the auditorium of the Carreau du Temple over a two-day period. The program is built on three pillars: Inspiring, Creating and Sharing.
Inspiring will shine a light on the pioneers, visionaries and cultural actors who have opened the way for others to discover contemporary art from Africa, and have become examples and reference points for today’s generation.
Creating is an invitation to journey behind the scenes. It reveals the long road travelled in the creation of a work of art: the source of inspiration, the choice of subject and the way it is explored and deepened. Artists open the doors of their studios and their minds, lifting the veil on how they work in their medium.
SHARING explores the way art reaches the public: education, publication and use of public space are at the heart of this examination. Institutions talk openly about their character traits — perseverance, passion, determination and adaptability — explaining their mission, their methods and their vision.
The international and multilingual panels demonstrate the importance AKAA places on openness and high-quality.
