Nina Canell — Dolphin Dandelion — Le Crédac, Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry — Exhibition — Slash Paris

The material and its intrinsic qualities are at the heart of the sculptural lexicon of Nina Canell (born in 1979 in Sweden). The artist points to the plasticity of transfers — of energy, matter, data, thoughts — which surround us, using the exhibition space as a field of correspondences. Her works result from the presence of concrete materials and immaterial forces allowing the emergence of fluctuating and unexpected relationships.

Emptied fiber-optic cable sheaths describe collapsed forms on the ground. Nothing seems to indicate the vast amount of shared energy by these submarine arteries, remains of today’s compressed world. Elsewhere, puddles of fractured water form a geography of collective surface tension, there, metal shelve support a sluggish layer of crawling mastic gum, further away, wires mechanically exercise and coordinate their temperature memory. The works in the exhibition sensitively interrupt and reimagine, insisting on meaning and exchange in the intermittent gaps between subjects and objects.

Nina Canell was born in sweden in 1979. She graduates from the Institute of art, Design, and Technology of Dun Laoghaire in Ireland. She lives and works in Berlin.

In 2017 she will be part of the Nordic pavilion for the Venice Biennale: Mirrored (Siri Aurdal, Nina Canell, Charlotte Johannesson, Jumana Manna, Pasi “Sleeping” Myllymäki, et Mika Taanila).

Currently, her artworks are exhibited at the Kunsthalle Wien (More Than Just Words, coll., 08/03 — 07/05/2017), at Kiasma — Finish National Gallery in Helsinki (Hello World!, coll., 31/03/2017 — 14/01/2018), and at the Tamayo Museum of Mexico City (Ayrton, solo, 01/04 -31/08/2017).

Nina Canell recently showed her work during solo and collective shows, from Shanghai (Reflexology, Leo Xu Projects, coll., 2016) to Venice (Accrochage, coll., Punta Della Dogana, 2016), passing by Ivry-sur-Seine (The Registry of Promise, chapitre 3. The Promise of Moving Things, coll., le Crédac, 2014), and Stockholm (Mid Sentence, solo, Moderna Museet, 2014 — 2015).

Nina Canell is represented by the galleries Barbara Wien (Berlin), Daniel Marzona (Berlin) and Mother’s Tankstation (Dublin).
