Nostalgia Cuba
Une soirée de projection avec Ernesto Oroza
Past: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 8 PM → 10 PM
Cuban artist, designer and author Ernesto Oroza, in residency at Villa Vassilieff with the Pernod Ricard Fellowship, will present two films rarely seen in France, around the cult figure of cuban film-maker Waldo Fernandez, aka “Marakka”, whose practice is based on piracy and the appropriation of images. Since 1983, Waldo Fernandez “Marakka” has been assembling an archive of Cuban audiovisual memory. The collection–which functions commercially under the “Marakka 2000” brand–relies and exploits a loophole created by current Cuba-U.S. diplomatic relations, and is sustained by a precise and astute understanding of current procedures regarding the protection of copyright in the U.S.
“Nostalgia cubana”, by Waldo Fernandez (Marakka) (1986, duration: 55’33’’) is composed of sequences of landscapes taken from several cuban films. This film is often used as a decor or “ambiance” in many Cuban restaurants and bars in Miami.
“Marakka 2012”, by Magdiel Aspillaga & Ernesto Oroza (2012, duration: 34’49’’, language: Spanish with English subtitles) explores the work of the filmmaker, “a monument to piracy”.
Before the screening, Nicolas Maigret & Maria Roszkowska will present “The Pirate Book”, a compilation of stories about sharing, distributing and experiencing cultural contents outside the boundaries of local economies, politics, or laws.
