A Proposal by Madeleine Mathé
The CACC is hosting the first solo exhibition of Belgian artist Ariane Loze, laureate of the Hauts-de-Seine Conseil départemental Prize at the 63th Salon de Montrouge.
In her expert videos — in which she directs herself — Ariane Loze analyzes and dissects her materia prima: the human and construction of the self. The title of the exhibition refers to the fabrication of our constantly shifting identities, which feed off of our exchanges with others, our different contexts and time periods, while also invalidating all notions of fixed identities.
The theme of the dinner party is at the heart of the exhibition the artist has proposed to the CACC. This type of social interaction — whether it is a worldly, family or friend affair — often makes an appearance in Ariane Loze’s work. It was notably at the center of the artist’s The Banquet, a 2016 video of an unprecedented in situ performance. A new version will be shot at the CACC prior to the exhibition’s opening, one in close dialogue with our venue and its contemporaneousness. The CACC will therefore become, in turn, the space for an exhibition, an installation to be discovered, a performance and a set.
In her videos, Ariane Loze simultaneously carries out the writing, directing, acting (she plays all of the characters), editing and post-production, making each video a performance in itself. This comprehensive approach to creation is astutely meaningful and allows the artist the perfection of all her images. Through the different appearances she takes on, Ariane Loze is not looking to fool anyone. Instead, through interpersonal dialogue that could very well be interior, she seeks to explore a multiplicity of personalities and the contradictions of daily life.
