From 1st to 7th of December, Les Rencontres Internationales in Paris will create a space of discovery and reflection focused on new cinema and contemporary art, for 7 days at Gaîté lyrique.
In the presence of artists and filmmakers from all over the world, this rare event will propose an international programme of film, video, multimedia, gathering 120 works from 40 countries, works by acknowledged artists along with young artists presented for the first time. It includes screenings — Premières, cartes blanches, video programme, etc. -, special events, multimedia concerts, panel discussions and a forum in the presence of art centre and museum directors. curators, artists and distributors who will share their experience and concerns about current moving image practices.
Some Highlights
- On December 1st, a unique opening night including a screening programme, and the performance “Tempestarii” by Nadine Hilbert and Gast Bouschet (Luxembourg, 53rd Venice Biennale), with Stephen O’Malley (USA).
- The latest film by Claire Denis (France), from a text by Christine Angot, “Voilà l’enchaînement”.
- The Paris première of “Ming of Harlem” by Phillip Warnell (United Kingdom), in the presence of the filmmaker and of the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy.
- On December 6 , the international première of “Expanding illuminance”, a multimedia concert by Thomas Köner (Germany). An hyptnotic journey through two visions of the future, two utopias, made from fragments of “Metropolis” (1927) byFritz Lang and “Tron” (1982) by Steven Lisberger.
- Focuses on artists, notably with Natacha Nisic (France), presented by Les Rencontres Internationales since 2006, solo exhibited at Jeu de Paume national museum in 2013.
- Severla full length films exploring new narrative forms made by young contemporary artists, notably “Tonight and the People” by Neil Beloufa (France).
- A new video by Ryan Trecartin (USA), solo exhibited at the Modern art museum of the City of Paris in 2011.
- Among the 120 films and videos, mostly internationally or French premièred, the lastest works by Thom Andersen (USA), Christoph Girardet (Germany), Lina Selander (Sweden) and Sandro Aguilar (Portugal).
Les Rencontres Internationales offers more than just a simple presentation of the works. It introduces an intercultural forum gathering various guests from all over the world — artists and filmmakers, institutions and emerging organizations — to testify of their reflections and their experiences, but also of artistic and cultural contexts that are often undergoing deep changes. Les Rencontres Internationales reflects specificities and convergences of artistic practices between new cinema and contemporary art, explores emerging media art practices and their critical purposes, and makes possible a necessary time where points of view meet and are exchanged.

Suivie à 21h30 de Tempestarii, une experience sonore et visuelle qui entend initier un processus d’alliance avec l’altérité des tempêtes, blizzards et courants d’air. Puis à partir de 22h30, vous retrouverez un Mix Live unique.

From 2pm there will be a day of screenings of films made by artists and directors from across the globe followed by a closing event at 8pm which includes the showing of Claire Denis’ last film, inspired by the text of Christine Angot’s ‘Voilà l’enchaînement’.
