The Missing Script, Objet de culte
Ends in about 2 months: January 23 → March 21, 2026
Since 2016, Robert Devriendt has been creating a series of works entitled The Missing Script, an ongoing project made up of small groups of paintings in which fragmented narration allows the uncanny to seep into his images. These small-format canvases suggest a potential storyline, or a narrative freely invented by the viewer.
The artist has often drawn inspiration during his walks in nature, repeatedly following the same path. What struck him most was not the natural elements themselves, but the disturbances that appeared within them: banal objects such as an abandoned perfume bottle or a car parked with its headlights on. These situations may evoke, perhaps, a “party” set within a lush, verdant countryside. Ultimately, however, his works simply depict isolated figures.
Each painting, each series, forms an independent fragment of a larger whole—strange and enigmatic. Robert Devriendt’s works are characterized by a captivating blend of sequential cinematic processes and a pictorial meticulousness that recalls the refinement of classical Flemish painting.
