Jean Brolly Gallery announces their third exhibition artist Bernard Aubertin’s work.
« Rouge » (red) is the title of this exhibition because red is the artist’s favorite color, the color through which he proves energy, spiritual and physical freedom. Bernard Aubertin met Yves Klein in 1957 and it was decisive for his red monochrome period. With a palette knife and a spatula he spread the color on the canvas and with a mechanical gesture he obtained a relief of small red teeth.
In this exhibition, some historical works like « Rouge flamme » — 1972-76, « Carré zérotique » — 1987 and « Monochrome rouge (série parpaing) » — 1989 will be presented with recent works such as wood sculptures, wooden boards covered with red color, or a new series of « tableaux-clous ». The carefully aligned nails are not completely planted in the wood so as to let the body of each nail appear.
In 1961, he joined a group of young Düsseldorf artists who claimed to start back from zero. Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günter Ueker were the founding fathers of the Zero movement. Their methods ranged from the geometric to the gestural, and they often employed industrial materials, fire and water, light and kinetic effects previously unknown to the fine arts. The serial principle frequently offered a means to organize the pictorial surface without recourse to traditional devices.
Bernard Aubertin was born in 1934. He lives and works in Reutlingen (Germany).
