“Scrawny but always dressed to the nines, the wire-like characters in Sarah Tritz’s bestiary do indeed hide their game well. Without depth—you can see through them despite the finery and baubles they are bedecked with—the characters she summons up at the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard, from Diabolo to Sluggo by way of The Giant and The Sleeping Figure, drag behind them a cohort of mystery guests. These illustrious and forgotten elders whom Sarah Tritz pulls from the sieve of art history (calling upon them with great precision, as in the case of the small shaky drawing of Antonin Artaud, a stitched collage by Picabia, a garish painting by Dana Schutz, as well as anthropomorphic door handles at the City of Paris Museum of Modern Art) form the very sound base of the characters which people her oeuvre.

And when she ventures for the first time towards three-dimensional sculpture, well-endowed and plump (albeit in wood), it is paradoxically when she goes looking for the flatness of the comic strip in presenting Sluggo, a young lad with rough edges straight out of American comics of the 1950s. And it is still on the same colorful backdrop that acts as a clothes line for the characters in this comic strip that the tubular silhouettes in the Sarah Tritz show are traced at the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard. A miniature theatre of unnatural marriages, of ill-matched couples, which draws in the negative a new representation of the world the wrong way round.”
