Sean Scully — Galerie Lelong Réalisées entre 2008 et 2014, les peintures monumentales Doric constituent l’une des séries les plus emblématiques de Sean Scully. ... CritiqueDoric is a cycle of large works produced by Sean Scully between 2008 and 2014. They all take the same format (around 300 × 400 cm), are made up of various combinations of grey, black and cream and consist of three large panels assembled together. Sean Scully designed this ensemble in homage to Greece, indeed, in his own words, as a “love letter" to Greece, “a country to which we owe so much”.
The Doric series was exhibited for the first time at the Benaki Museum in Athens in 2012, then at the IVAM in Valence and most recently at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin in 2013.
Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945. He has been an American citizen since 1983. Retrospectives of his work have been organised by the world’s leading museums: Jeu de Paume Paris 1996, Albertina Museum, Vienna 1999, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen, Düsseldorf, 2001, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2006, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, 2006, Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne, 2007, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2012.
The catalogue Repères n°159 reproduces the complete Doric series, with texts by Jean Fremon, Kelly Grovier and Sean Scully.
