The Sole Champions
By Yaya Herman Dune
Past: June 15 → July 21, 2012
On June 17th, 1940, upon hearing that France had surrendered to the Nazis, Winston Churchill declared that the British had become “The Sole Champions now in arms to defend the world cause.” To later add that he was sure that “in the end all will come right”;
In this new exhibition, Yaya Herman Dune (aka David Ivar) decides to focus on historical figures who bring him, by their writings, their words and actions, moral consolation to face up today’s world. He met these emblematic men during his readings and they are helping him in his moments of doubt. He wants to honor them through this new set of drawings and carved masks and combines them with Blue Bigfoot, his pictorial alter ego. They are, in addition to Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein or Abraham Lincoln. Because they are the ones that will make that in the end all will come right.
Yaya Herman Dune, aka David Ivar, born in Paris in 1976, is artist and musician in eponymous band Herman Dune. Born in a swedish-maroccan jewish family, he is very soon influenced by the work of swedish painter Anders ZORN. His first album is released in 2000 and he starts showing his drawings while touring around the world. He also works with artist Marion HANNANIA. Both are very inspired by the lakes of Dalarna in Sweden and the forest around them. Their collaboration took the form of a work around a Bigfoot (Yeti) wandering in a imaginary Dalarna.
