The Journal will chronicle the programming of Galerie Loevenbruck’s new space at 12, rue Jacques-Callot.
This first issue is devoted to its inaugural exhibition, “Victorien Sardou — ‘Spiritism,’” held from 20 September to 26 October 2024. It includes a new essay by Pascal Rousseau, “Fantasy of the Spirit,” analysing Victorien Sardou’s experiences as a medium, a conversation between Claude de Flers and Nathalie Loevenbruck about their ancestor, and a list of the pieces in the show.
It is illustrated by two of Sardou’s works, a drawing, La Maison de Zoroastre sur Jupiter, and an engraving, Quartier des Animaux chez Zoroastre, dating from 1857-1858, plus a reproduction of an autograph manuscript from 9 April 1857 and two photographic portraits of Victorien Sardou made between 1885 and 1905, from the archives of the Musée Carnavalet — Histoire de Paris.
On the back page, Éditions Loevenbruck pay homage to the Galerie Surréaliste, founded in 1926, with a photograph of its street window taken by Man Ray in around 1927, now in the Centre Pompidou collection. This is accompanied by “Notes on the Galerie Surréaliste” by Camille Paulhan, who recounts the history of its exhibitions, and an architect’s note by Vincent Dassault, who offers a contemporary take on the new façade, together with a photograph of this architectural project by Ludovic Balland.
