Wahib Chehata — Renaissance
Exposition personnelle de photographies

Past: September 9 → October 7, 2017

Wahib Chehata, a French Tunisian artist, who is interested to combine the religious and symbolic themes of the Renaissance, the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio and the emotions of Romanticism. In Romanticism, he has undoubtedly retained its exaltation and mystery, the ability to juggle between the morbid and the sublime, a pure and subjective creative freedom bathed between orientalism, Christian mythologies and current technological tools: a Romanticism 2.0.

In the Renaissance series, presented at A2Z Art Gallery, with the support of the Montresso* Art Foundation (Marrakech), light takes precedence over the subject and exports itself to Africa: from Senegal to Mali. Wahib is a painter first of all. A gesture that he is able to develop by drawing, painting relentlessly in his studio.

In Africa, Wahib returns again and again to the gesture. But what is exactly the meaning of this gesture? To paint is to understand where lies the power of movement, to know where are the lines of force or to convey sensations by the artifice of the image. If this gesture explains itself badly, is because it’s alive. The painting makes it possible to hear its sounds, to feel its smells, whether acrid or sweet, and gives the desire to touch them.
