Biennale du Whitney 2026, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
Relying on a stimulating reflection on the generative power of art and its capacity to create elements of a new order, the Whitney Biennial 2026 presents an edition that enacts the de-hierarchization of a value system whose contemporary history exposes its undeniable fragility every day. We offer a focus on major figures of this exhibition, which promises to be essential.
The eighty-second edition of the Whitney Biennial, the oldest and one of the most prestigious events dedicated to contemporary art in the United States, brings together 56 artists, duos, and collectives whose works engage intensely with our present moment. This edition explores the many forms of relationships that shape today’s world: interspecies connections, family dynamics, geopolitical interdependencies, technological affinities, shared mythologies, and the networks of infrastructure that sustain our societies.
For its 2026 edition, the Biennial offers an immersive and sensorial journey through contemporary American art at a pivotal moment marked by profound transformations. Rather than providing definitive answers to the major questions of our time, the exhibition foregrounds atmospheres, textures, and lived experiences. It invites visitors to enter environments where tension, tenderness, humor, and unease intertwine. The works on view reflect the full complexity of the present and gesture toward imaginative, unruly, and unexpected forms of coexistence.
A monumental billboard installed opposite the museum’s entrance on Gansevoort Street extends the experience into the urban space and affirms the Biennial’s presence at the heart of the city.
The Whitney Biennial is co-organized by Whitney curators Marcela Guerrero, DeMartini Family Curator, and Drew Sawyer, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography, in collaboration with Beatriz Cifuentes, Biennial Curatorial Assistant, and Carina Martinez, Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow.
