Alexander Gorlizki
The British-born artist lives in New York and also maintains an atelier in Jaipur, India that he established in 1997 where he works alongside a number of artists and craftsmen across a range of traditional techniques. These include miniature painting, marble carving, sand casting, embroidery and carpet weaving amongst others.
Gorlizki’s best known works stem from his self-described “obsession” with Indian miniature paintings, a centuries old tradition that he has reinterpreted with a unique vision. The artistic process is a collaborative one, involving master miniaturist painter, Riyaz Uddin and his assistants and the works are passed from hand to hand or sent back and forth between Rajasthan and New York, often over a period of years until complete.
These jewel — like works on paper are created using pigments and gold applied with a brush tipped with a single hair and the mesmerizing detail and visual complexity is breath taking and technically unsurpassed.
Gorlizki’s whimsical, quirky scenes and optical and lush geometrical forms reflect his rich visual language that crosses over cultural boundaries and draws on numerous art historical references in which no separation is made between representative and non objective abstract imagery.
