Antoine Schneck
Antoine Schneck was born in 1963. After graduating from Louis Lumière cinema school he leaves for Africa. He goes to Burkina Faso then Mali, Sudan and Ethiopia (but also in China, in India and more recently in Papua) from where he brings back numerous portraits. Isolated on a black background, these portraits are freed from any outside influence; shadows are absent and light come from the face.
“Because I’ve always sought to transcend the notion of distance, I’ve chosen to direct a portion of my work toward a more radical quest. The black background removes the people I photograph from their environment: their surroundings and expressions, their relationship to the world and even to the photographer. When I read a face- I seek a sort of revelation. With the negation of lights as a technique, my work excludes any encumbrances or superfluous reflections to capture the face in its nakedness an in its essence.”
