Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold is an American artist, author, and educator known for her vibrant and politically charged paintings, story quilts, and children’s books. Born in Harlem, New York City in 1930, she grew up in a neighborhood filled with jazz music and the influences of the Civil Rights Movement.
Ringgold began her artistic career as a painter in the 1960s and was a member of the Black Arts Movement, a group of African American artists who sought to create a distinct black aesthetic and promote political and social change. She is best known for her “story quilts”, which combine painting and quilting to tell stories and convey political messages.
In the 1970s, Ringgold began to focus on children’s literature and authored several children’s books, including the award-winning Tar Beach which was based on one of her story quilts. She also worked as an art teacher in the New York City public schools and was a professor of art at the University of California, San Diego.
Ringgold’s work has been exhibited in major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. She continues to be an influential figure in the art world, known for her powerful and thought-provoking work that addresses issues of race, gender, and social justice.
