Fay Ku — À propos — Slash Paris

Working on paper, Fay KU creates whimsical yet disturbing tableaux, featuring mainly young women and children in both vulnerable and aggressive postures. With an accomplished draftsmanship and unusual vision, she exposes the tension between feminine and delicate subjects and their undercurrent violence and exploitation. Fay Ku’s work is nurtured by her Chinese cultural heritage and the tales she used to hear as a child. It is also inspired by contemporary life and the different cultures and environments she explores during her multiple artist residencies. The themes of femininity, the body, childhood and fairytales are omnipresent in her works where simple lines of graphite are usually combined with watercolor, ink and sometimes collage to create complex and colourful compositions.

Fay Ku was born in 1974 in Taipei. She received her Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute New York in 2006. She exhibited for the first time in France in 2009 at L MD galerie with the show Outliers. After her solo show at the New Britain Museum of American Art (New England) in 2009, her work was shown at the Contemporary Museum of Honolulu and to the Salon du dessin contemporain (with L MD) in spring 2010. She was part of a summer group show at Heidi Cho gallery in 2010 and on view in solo at Sam Lee gallery in Los Angeles in 2011.
