Geert Goiris
At first glance, Geert Goiris’ photographs document unexpected and extraordinary places. However, the artist conceives his pieces outside of any narrative and tries to produce images without hints or indexes.
In the series entitled Whiteout (2008-2009), the artist photographed the polar ice cap. These figurative landscapes become abstract trough sheer overexposure: the white tones blend and seem unable to tell the viewer anything about the spaces being explored. These images contain neither messages nor information, but guide the viewer towards a personal experience, one of receptiveness and extreme sensitivity. Despite their formal banality, these photographs are both unnerving and compelling.
Geert Goiris deals here with unusual subjects from a particular angle. The absence of an agenda makes way for the development — trough attraction and resistance — of a possible space for contemplation.
