Julie Béna
Boat wrecks reappears, tissues are transformed into monuments, a beam of light rises in the middle of clouds… Proceeding with slides, swings and variations, Julie Béna diverts images and daily objects. They become little by little the subjects of strange and poetic fictions. Through installations, photography, videos, sound pieces or performances, the artist investigates the moment of transition, like the short time between day fall and night. This fragile balance reveals what is not visible at the first glance, what takes place in a moment of expectation and what the fate could provoke imperceptibly. The choice of the titles participates in this diversion towards narration and theatrality: A bientôt (See you soon), Quand elle n’attendra plus ce sera fini… (When she will not wait any more it will be finished…), Hélas hélas (Alas Alas). But these prossible stories are not verifiable. They replay the reminiscence, a vague or incomplete memory difficult to call back, in a " here and now "
For the exhibition « Tout ce qui arrive arrive par l’escalier » in L MD gallery, the artist stages captures of the reality, elements from her journeys, which evoke the visible and the invisible. By composing from forms and commonplace materials, Julie Béna produces unexpected narratives, which let us think that nothing is fixed, because spaces of drift still exist.
