William Wegman
Known for his photographs and videos featuring his Weimaraner dogs, William Wegman is an American artist born in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1943. He received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and his MFA from the University of Illinois.
Wegman began experimenting with photography in the late 1960s and early 1970s, using his Weimaraner, Man Ray, as the subject of many of his photographs. These images, which often featured the dog in human-like poses and situations, quickly gained popularity and cemented Wegman’s reputation as a playful and innovative artist.
In addition to his photography, Wegman has also worked in painting, drawing, and video. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also been featured in many group exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale. He’s also known for his participation in Sesame Street.
Wegman has received several awards throughout his career, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has also been honored with retrospective exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
His photographs and videos are held in the collections of many major museums worldwide and he’s represented in France by GP & N Vallois Gallery.
