Bruno Albizzati — Composites
Exhibition
Bruno Albizzati
Composites
Past: March 16 → April 22, 2017
“Composites” is the first solo exhibition of Bruno Albizzati at the Galerie La Forest Divonne.
Bruno Albizzati’s work is developed in several parallel and complementary series. The exhibition “Composites” will present : consumés, composites, sidewalks, empreintes, lumi della carta and reflexions.
In lumi della carta the artist works with graphite and charcoal powder on large framing cardboard plates. Covering up very slowly the plates, in a constant mouvement of back and forth, like if it was a graphic dance, Bruno Albizzati deepens the black in order to reveal the light.
In Bruno Albizzati’s work it always seems like it is from chaos, from the crack or from the darkness, that springs the light: the collages make the piece. In his collages it is the juxtaposition of asymmetric fragments that creates a finished piece. The composites, notably, are formed by the leftovers of cardboard plates covered in graphite powder that are then recut and assembled together in collages. Sometimes the work seems exploded : the empreintes, are almost always presented in diptyque so as to warn the spectator that it might be a space in between, a grey area. Bruno Albizzati talks about «concrete process» : he displays onto the canvas some branches found here and there and spray paints it, leaving the ghosts of the branches to appear in front of our eyes. The canvas is then usually left outside, so the rain and the wind can continue the artist’s work.
The consumés are smaller formats, shiny and patinated, like if they were burnt.
The sidewalks are done by rubbing charcoal powder onto paper. The paper being on top of the subject which is to be transferred. The subjects are all different : a New York sidewalk, the studio’s floor boards, or eroded stones. Each of them are highly symbolic or charged with personal history. Those large sheets of paper are sometimes then abandoned, roughly treated or creased in the studio before being empowered again by the artist by reworking it. After, the brake or the bursting, the rain, wind or fire alteration the matter evolves, is reborn and reappears. From darkness comes light, from chaos comes order.
Albizzati’s creative movement, specifically in front of his layouts, could be seen as a choreography. His work itself is ruled by contradictory back and forth movements, a maieutic where each series answers the other, trial after trial, in a quest for light.
