“I started to express myself working with photography and video to finally establish new ways of working with other kind of medias”

The Corps et Paysages Mutations series focuses on the re-creations of landscapes with an ambiguous character. They query about urban worlds, where human activities collide with the environment. This is a reflection about metropolis evolution.

“All my work tackles the question of the dialectic of contraries: true / false, beautiful / ugly, attractive / repulsive. The purpose is to show that everything can decline into its opposite, and then in the exchange that leads to other discoveries.”

For her first exhibition at the Inception Gallery, Christine Barbe reveals a certain maturity in her photography and video experimentation. She testifies a new and deep reflection related to our human condition in our environment and the way the body takes part in this atmosphere.

The series Paysage-Mutation is a synthesis of the environmental change that actually suffers our contemporary landscapes. It’s a collision in the environment done by human activities that make us think about the future in the metropolis. Scanning between realism and fantasy, the landscape can suffer a transformation. Nevertheless, the small border between these two entities denotes the concealment of economic, industrial and leisure activities.

In the artwork entitled “The Baptism”, based on the performance-installation of Romina De Novellis –the baptism of a body in a baptismal stage- Christine Barbe has created a video that interprets the story of a woman making intimate gestures under everybody’s eyes. It’s a video that personifies the transformation of a body inside the city.

Christine Barbe has a degree in Arts and Sciences of Art and a degree in Cinema at the University of Plastic Arts in Saint-Charles in Paris and at the Institute of Art and Archaeology of the University of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne.

Christine Barbe’s artworks are exhibited in many private collections in the United States, Japan, Europe, and also in permanent collections of museums and foundations, including the Museum of Modern Art in Grenoble, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Museum of Contemporary Art of San José in the United States, the Coprim Foundation in Paris, the Novotel contemporary art Collection, the Deutsch Foundation in Lausanne, the Asilah contemporary art Fund in Morocco and that Silver Fine Art in London.
