Distances différentes

Past: November 7, 2012 → January 21, 2013

Beyond our borders, a new generation of Swedish fashion photographers has been making a reputation for itself, spotted by international magazines, institutions and art galleries. These photographers explore and displace limits, create atmospheres that bewitch us.

This collection of strong personalities masters the difference between the intimate and the distant. Their art is a game of balance between fashion and artistic photography, plunging its roots in art history and personal experiences.

So is the case with Denise Grünstein’s maverick photographies in which the artist masters the switch between the atmosphere in her own creations and works of commission. Work whose main focus is the theme of women and nature, her playground — a visual world peculiar to the artist, powerful and suggestive.

Julia Hetta’s romantic and timeless images show an alternative world inhabited by mysterious and omniscient beings, evolving slowly in a place where the light is always soft, however permeated with a feeling of impatience.

The colours are so saturated and the textures look so real they make one want to step closer and touch them.

Martina Hoogland Iwanow’s photographies are unique. They give the onlooker the sensation of a presence both real and poetic, combined with a menacing and hypnotic aesthetic. Each image behaves like a novella. The photographer collects shadows and mists whose imprecision is precisely what constitutes their strength.

Julia Peirone masters the art of capturing moments out of our control, which we do not have time to perceive. Her images seem unflattering, for instance with her series of portraits of teenage girls who, at an age where they’re transforming into women, are conscious of the image they offer and of the other’s gaze.

Elisabeth Toll says « If there is no light, I can’t see anything ». Her photographs are inspired by personal recollections, stories, impressions and sensations which she relives and shares with us. These images spark my curiosity by their strong link to architecture and their dash of surrealism.
